When open-heart surgery is the best course of action for your condition, you may have questions. Wilfredo Crespo-Velez, MD, a cardiothoracic surgeon at both Doctors Hospital of Laredo and Laredo Physicians Group, provides insights to address your concerns.

When is open-heart surgery necessary?

It’s usually necessary when blockages in the coronary arteries prevent the heart from receiving enough blood and oxygen. This procedure can also correct congenital heart anomalies and repair or replace malfunctioning heart valves.

What are the benefits of open-heart surgery?

While minimally invasive procedures are becoming more common, traditional open-heart surgery is sometimes required. It offers a potential long-term solution for various cardiac issues, such as cholesterol plaque buildup in the coronary arteries.

What can a patient scheduled for open-heart surgery expect?

Surgery usually lasts several hours. Patients typically go to the ICU for a few days and go home in about 5 – 6 days. Full recovery takes about 6 weeks. Patients also participate in cardiac rehab post-surgery to help their recovery process.

How should I prepare

for open-heart surgery?

Tell your doctor all the medications you are taking, and discuss your medical history. You’ll register at the hospital the day before surgery, and you’ll undergo routine laboratory tests. A nurse will explain the procedure and answer any questions you have.
