What is a Freestanding Emergency Department?

24/7 emergency care, where and when you need it

Freestanding emergency departments, or FEDs for short, offer emergency department services and more, close to home. They have all of the amenities, services and same feel as our hospital-based ERs, and are operated under a hospital license, which means they are held to the same standards as if they were located in the hospital. Anyone with a medical emergency can walk in at any time.

There are currently two FEDs in the Reno-Sparks community, and a new one expected in early 2024. All locations are open 24/7 and treat all ages, from pediatrics to seniors. In addition, they are staffed with board-certified physicians and emergency-trained nurses.

If a patient needs to be transferred to a full-service hospital, they can be admitted directly, without having to go through the hospital emergency room. The patient’s information will also transfer electronically to the main hospital, and medical staff will be ready to continue care when the patient arrives. Patients may also request to be transferred to a hospital of their choice.

The facilities offer outpatient laboratory services, diagnostic imaging including X-ray, CT, and ultrasound, as well as an onsite Pharmacy if medications are needed during the patient’s stay.
