HIGHLIGHTS
“The joy, the love, the laughter, the ups, and downs—I’d do it all over again.”
We celebrated the first anniversary of the Family Center at Excel Academy in our Poppleton Neighborhood Zone. In its first year, The Family Center has served more than 40 students and 65 families; four students in this program graduated high school. Two are working, one is enrolled in United Way’s Certified Nursing Assistant/Geriatric Nursing Assistant program, and one is working for United Way!

With nearly 800 high school and college students, we celebrated the premier of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. “United, we can’t lose!”
Close to 400 friends and supporters of United Way gathered at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum for a powerful and inspiring “In Their Own Words” presentation featuring Governor Wes Moore and to celebrate our work. The Governor outlined what a stronger Baltimore City means for our state and shared the impact his proposed budget will have on education, affordable housing, mental health support, and economic mobility for working people.

We were honored to host United Way Worldwide CEO Angela Williams, who spent the day touring our sites, learning about our impact programs firsthand, and meeting with our staff, board members, and key stakeholders. She also shared with us her vision for the organization which aligns so well with our work here in Greater Baltimore.

Voices for Change
16 volunteers and 11 United Way team members travelled to Annapolis to meet with 37 elected officials to talk about our work and 2023 legislative priorities. The event culminated in a lunch with Lt. Governor Aruna Miller, who said, “One of the fundamental beliefs that the Governor and I have is those closest to the challenge are closest to the solution.” Every day, we connect people to opportunities, needs to solutions, and communities to success. Check out the new Public Policy webpage and resources that will help guide our advocacy efforts.

- Thousands of people received food and meals
- Thousands of students received stress-relief kits and school supplies
- Veterans were recognized and thanked for their service
- Food, clothes, and essentials were stocked, sorted, and packed
- Urban gardens were prepared for winter
- Puppies in training to be service dogs were cuddled

AWARDS
United Way was named to the Executive Alliance’s Honor Roll in recognition of the strides we’ve made to diversify our organization at top executive levels. The Honor Roll highlights companies and nonprofits that employ women in at least 30% of their executive leadership roles and have women in at least 30% of their board of director seats.

Diversity – an essential at United Way of Central Maryland
It's no surprise to us that our own Heather Chapman was named to The Daily Record’s Top 100 Women list. These awards recognize high-achieving Maryland women who are making an impact through their leadership, community service, and mentoring.
