WHERE
Resource hub offering high quality childcare and early education for up to 73 children, and supportive services for families who live and work in Howard County.
WHAT
Howard County is known for having one of the highest median incomes in the state. But it also has one of the highest costs of living, making it a difficult place for low-to moderate-income families to get ahead.
Higher than average childcare costs in the region—averaging
$2,000/month for two children–place an additional burden on
families who are already struggling to make ends meet.
And when employees take time off work because they can't
afford or find care for their children, companies pay the price
in absenteeism and lost productivity—and barriers in hiring
and retention.
WHY
The Columbia Family Center will:
how
Break down barriers to affordable, accessible childcare for those who live and work
in Howard County
Help increase economic mobility for parents
Benefit local businesses by reducing parent absenteeism, and augment employee
recruitment and retention strategies
Hardworking ALICE families have limited options for affordable childcare in Howard County. Early Head Start programs—for infants and toddlers from families with low incomes—don’t exist in Howard County.
And while recent changes expanded the number of families who qualify for childcare subsidies, less than half the providers in Columbia accept these vouchers. The United Way Family Center in Columbia will accept these vouchers, which can subsidize up to $400 of the weekly rate.
