Your investment, as one of the initial funders of this innovative program, will create opportunities for young men to achieve their dreams, creating a strong pipeline of engaged leaders to excel in their careers and strengthen our workforce.
"This is an equity-driven initiative that will break down barriers to opportunity and access, making it possible for young men of color to achieve their hopes and dreams for a better future. I’m honored to serve as the National Co-Chair for this program, which will be the largest of its kind in the country. I wish Young Men United was an option when my friends and I began our college and career journeys—it is truly a game changer that will strengthen and improve both lives and our workplaces."
-Franklyn Baker
President and Chief Executive Officer,
United Way of Central Maryland
Replicating national best practices in mentoring and college readiness programming, Young Men United will provide participants with mentoring opportunities, guidance throughout the college search and application process, financial and educational support, as well as internships and job experiences.
YOUNG MEN
UNITED
Help us break down barriers to success facing young men of color in the Baltimore area. Young Men United is an equity-driven initiative that will help close education and earning gaps--and we were selected as one of only six United Ways nationwide to launch this program.
The Need
The goal
Nationally, black men have the lowest four-year college completion rate of all groups (only 40%) and are the most likely to leave without a degree (41%).
Only 23% of Black men and 28% of Hispanic men in the Baltimore area have a bachelor’s degree or higher versus 47% of White men.
In Baltimore City, 58% of White residents are employed in management, business, science, and arts occupations versus 29% of Black residents.
