what's next
No hero, in any timeline, of any multiverse, has gone through the kind of epic evolution that the God of Thunder has. From a would-be king to an Avenger, an outcast, a gladiator, a Titan-slayer, and eventually, the savior of the universe, Thor has remade himself time and again, taking fans on wild adventures that span the cosmos. There has been loss and chaos, triumph and friendship, ridiculous quests, eccentric villains, and a surprisingly emotional love affair with a hammer, but the undercurrent of Thor’s story has always been one of self-discovery. Will he ever find his place and his purpose in the galaxy? That’s what audiences hope to discover in Thor: Love and Thunder, but before that journey begins, let’s catch up on where this other-worldly superhero has been.

A mythical world (hello Asgard), a feuding family of otherworldly gods, a banishment that lands an over-confident and reckless warrior somewhere in the New Mexico desert – Thor was a wildly different superhero introduction with director Kenneth Branagh’s “superhero, but make it Shakespeare” energy lighting the way. While the film may not be as riotously funny and wonderfully weird as some of its followers, it’s a clear indication that Marvel was not going to take Thor as seriously as he took himself sometimes.

You can thank Thor’s dysfunctional family for the assemblage of Earth’s mightiest heroes in The Avengers. Loki, a trouble-making trickster with surprising staying power, steals an all-powerful cube called the Tesseract and uses it (plus an army of alien warriors) to attempt the enslavement of all mankind. His extra-curricular activities are enough of a problem that Thor must team up with Tony Stark/Iron Man, Steve Rogers/Captain America, Bruce Banner/Hulk, and Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow to extradite him back to Asgard for daddy to deal with.

A Convergence, a prophecy, and a Dark Elf with an eons-old grudge fuel the action of this sequel that sees Thor reuniting with Jane Foster to battle a new threat. The Bifrost has been mended and Thor is back protecting the nine realms as Loki sits imprisoned in Asgard but a dangerous weapon called the Aether attaches itself to Thor’s former flame, awakening a long-frozen enemy who wreaks havoc on Asgard and Earth.

Loki’s scepter is being used for some naughty experimentation on the Maximoff twins, so naturally Thor joins The Avengers in retrieving it. The problem? Once Stark and Banner get their hands on the weapon, they use it to power a new A.I. system that goes rogue. While the rest of the team is battling Iron Man’s android Frankenstein, Thor discovers the existence of the Infinity Stones - powerful celestial objects we’ll definitely see again. He also brings another superhero, Vision, to life with just his hammer and a bit of lightning. Not bad!

Thor is in his glow-up era with this Taika Waititi-directed comedy adventure. Ragnarok, the prophesized destruction of Asgard, is on the horizon and Hela, the Goddess of Death, is hellbent on ruling the realms. With Mjolnir destroyed and both Thor and Loki cast out to a garbage dump of a planet named Sakaar, the God of Thunder is in desperate need of friends. He finds them in the Hulk, a Kronan warrior named Korg, and a legendary shield maiden, Valkyrie. The group works together to defeat Hela by sacrificing Asgard (and one of Thor’s eyes) before they set off to find a new home amongst the cosmos.

Thanos soft launches his plan to wipe out half the galaxy by attacking Thor’s ship and killing the Asgardians on board (including Heindall and Loki) in his quest to retrieve the Space Stone. Thor gets tossed into space and is eventually rescued by the Guardians of the Galaxy – a motley crew of criminals and godly-rejects with a weird fascination for his perfectly-sculpted physique. Hey, we get it. After Thor persuades a dwarf king to craft Stormbreaker, Thor heads back to Earth to destroy Thanos before he can snap away any more of his friends. It’s not a spoiler to say things don’t go according to plan.

Thanos is able to destroy the Infinity Stones before what’s left of the Avengers eliminate him and the group spends the next five years sad girl summering their way to restoring order in a broken universe. Thor, depressed and hiding out in New Asgard (AKA Norway) reluctantly helps Avengers reverse the snap with some time-travel shenanigans, reuniting with his mother and his hammer before confronting Thanos with an army of superheroes at his back. Does he need to lay off the Cheez Whiz and beer? Maybe. Should he go to therapy? Absolutely. Instead, he hitches a ride with the Guardians to find a new adventure, leaving Valkyrie to play King to his people.

The galaxy’s most troublesome group of dysfunctional a-holes might still be reeling from the events of Avengers: Endgame but that doesn’t mean they can’t help the God of Thunder find his place in the universe. Obviously, Star-Lord would rather not, but Rocket, Groot, Drax, Nebula, and Mantis like to swoon over the be-muscled God-Man and Gamora’s not around to talk any sense into them.

Thor’s scheming younger brother has been on a multiverse-traversing odyssey of his own, battling the Time Variance Authority after being “resurrected” in Avengers: Endgame. Whether Thor is aware of his sibling’s pivot to TVA agent or if Loki will be making an appearance in this latest adventure remains to be seen – but whether the trickster god deserves it or not, his brother’s still got love for him.

A shield-maiden sworn to defend the Asgardian throne, Valkyrie now sits atop it, ruling over her people on Midgard as Thor goes on his epic walkabout in space. Used to bloody battlefields, Sataar scrapyards, and guzzling copious amounts of alcohol, reigning over a kingdom isn’t the promotion it sounds like, especially for an elite warrior. Fortunately, Thor can’t do anything on his own so she’ll get to break the internet with her knife-licking antics soon enough.

A Kronan warrior cosplaying as a pile of rocks, Korg is one of Thor’s most loyal allies. After helping him defeat his sister Hela, siding with him against Thanos, and taking care of the Asgardian God following the snap, Korg has earned his place as a friend to the God of Thunder. Sure, he’s underestimated the power of an infinity supply of pamphlets in starting a revolution, and he probably shouldn’t be gaming against trolls named Noobmaster69 but he’s a good guy to have in your corner. We think.

Astrophysicist Jane Foster has been off studying planets and cosmic energy fields while her ex-boyfriend and his team of avenging superheroes tried to save the universe. He got a haircut and lost an eye, she’s somehow brandishing god-like powers and wielding his beloved hammer. They really aren’t the same. Still, this new Mighty Thor is going to be roped into a battle for the galaxy one way or another, so we’ll see if staying friends is actually doable for superheroes.

Like his mythological Greek counterpart, this Zeus is an all-powerful deity ruling over a smothered-in-gold Olympus without a care in the galaxy. That is, until Thor shows up. As Gorr the God Butcher hunts divinely-powered beings, the God of Thunder and his team visit this flamboyant, ego-centric sovereign hoping to warn him and ask for his help in defeating this new threat. Whether Zeus will wield a lightning bolt or two for the cause is anyone’s guess.

The God of Thunder. Protector of the Nine Realms. Son of Odin. Pirate-Angel. Thor Odinson goes by many names but, after surviving a handful of cosmic adventures and more than a few apocalyptic events, he’s on a journey of self-discovery now. With his people safe on Earth, his brother tangling with the Time Variance Authority, his former lover wielding Mjolnir, and a god butcher on the loose, this shredded supernatural himbo needs to figure out his fate-ordained purpose and fast.

A fan-favorite villain from the comics, Gorr’s more than just a yassified Fester Adams.
His tragic backstory – his faith in Gods was destroyed, his tribe exiled him, you know,
all the normal genocidal maniac origin story tropes--and relentless quest for vengeance make him a truly intimidating adversary for Thor and his friends. Plus, he’s got a God-killing weapon that makes Mjolnir look like it came from a child’s toy chest.
what's next
Look, enlightenment and finding your place in the world while partying with space weirdos is cool and all, but what does it matter if all the gods in the universe are dead. Thor’s journey to find inner peace might need to wait until a pesky god butcher retires and he sorts things out with his ex.
