TASMANIA
I love being close to the water and immersing myself in nature, so Tassie’s rugged beauty is a huge drawcard for me. Places like the Bay of Fires and the west coast are unmatched for getting out on the water. All across the island, you’ll find these amazing food spots in the most unexpected places, where the produce is local and the flavours unbelievable.
A trip to Tassie isn’t complete without a visit to MONA. There’s always something unforgettable on show, plus the trip on the car ferry is an experience in itself. Follow it up with dinner at Schole, a 10-seater Japanese spot serving Tassie produce.
Out of Hobart (and if you have the time and gear), hiking some of the Overland Trail is an unbelievable immersion in nature. Finish at Lake St Claire with a stay at Pumphouse Point, with chocolate tastings, history tours and fresh bread delivered direct to your suite.

ADELAIDE
Adelaide punches well above its size, this little pocket rocket of a city, packed with amazing food spots and a fizzing arts scene. There’s always something hidden around
the corner, and you never know quite what you’ll find.
For a caffeine fix, park up at Exchange Coffee and go to town on their batch brew and granola. Follow it up with a browse of the Central Market and a little wander over to Glenelg Beach. Osteria Oggi does amazing plates of pasta, while you’ll find great drinks and good company at the New Orleans-inspired bar NOLA or the pint-sized Bar Lune.
Further afield, you’ll find the most amazing wine regions in the Adelaide Hills, Barossa and Clare Valley, while the Flinders Rangers are amazing for an outback adventure.

MELBOURNE
I love a trip to Melbourne, particularly in winter when the city really feels alive. You’ve got footy fans post-match mixing with the arts and theatre crowds spilling from all these beautiful old buildings. You’ll find them all elbow-to-elbow in a rough and ready restaurant having the best Thai food of their lives, or on a rooftop looking out over the skyline. Everyone comes together in Melbourne over good food—I love that.
If you have the time, spend an afternoon in the winter sun at Edinburgh Gardens in Fitzroy North for people watching and a low-key lounge with a good book. Follow it up with lawn bowls and a pot or two at the local club, before rolling over to Good Times Pasta Bar for cheap and cheerful pasta.
Cityside, Soi 38’s wildly good Bangkok-style street food is worth the queues, and you’ll always find something cool going down at the Forum or Athenaeum Theatre. Over in the south, Prahran Market has the most amazing fresh produce, while you’ll find great brekky spots that focus on healthy, nourishing feeds, like Juniper and Monk Bodhi Dharma.

If your idea of a good time involves last-minute road trips, unwinding in nature and finding the best brekky nooks in town, you’ve come to the right place.
From Adelaide’s hills and Tassie’s wild rivers to Melbourne’s laneways and Western Sydney’s hidden pockets (and everything in between), Olympic canoeing champ Jess Fox loves to discover new spots around Australia.
Olympic canoe slalom champion
Jess Fox's guide to Aussie exploration.
Racing down whitewater has taken me across the globe, but nothing beats returning home to Aus. From its family-run corner cafes to barefoot beach days, this country has a way of pulling you in. These are the places that always draw me back—and a few local favourites worth checking out.”

WESTERN
SYDNEY
Growing up in Penrith, out in Western Sydney, I was always finding little corners to explore. It’s one of those areas that has formed into its own scene—you’ve got cafes run by neighbours mixed with new restaurants popping up in old shopfronts. I still stumble across new gems every time I’m back, places I’ve never noticed before but somehow feel like they’ve always been there.
Take a break from the rush and spend some time outdoors by doing the Great River Walk. Winding around Penrith’s Nepean River, it’s an easy stroll over bridges and past lush greenery. Pop in to Laughin’ Boy for a coffee or brunch—it’s right on the river walk route, so it’s the perfect place to refuel.
A top-notch spot I’ve recently discovered is Two Sisters Deli, run by two sisters, Rima and Rita. They do these great gourmet focaccia sandos that you can take away and sit by the edge of the river. Or, if there’s a special occasion on the cards, book a table on Sinclair’s deck overlooking the amazing waterway and sunset over the Blue Mountains.
