Explore the Northeast With This Family-Friendly Road Trip Guide
By Meg St-Esprit

Coal was king in the Poconos for generations, which shaped much of the local history and culture. This unique museum makes a great road trip stop — the whole tour takes less than two hours. On the tour, visitors get the chance to “go down in history” as they descend 300 feet into the earth via a mine car to learn about past anthracite mining in the region.

Located just a quick turn off the interstate, Great Wolf Lodge
has locations throughout the Northeast, including Baltimore, Williamsburg, and the Pocono Mountains. The water park is a warm 84 degrees year-round, with a massive wave pool, lazy river, and tons of water slides for your pack to enjoy together after a long day on
the road. Or, choose from activities like bowling, mini golf, ropes courses, and nightly dance parties. The best part? With several on-site dining options, there’s no need to venture back onto the road once your pack makes themselves at home at a Great Wolf Lodge.

For three decades, this local staple has fed tourists and locals alike in the Poconos. Beginning as a simple farm stand, Village Farmer and Bakery has expanded to include sandwiches, pot pies, and other meal options — but the sweets still reign supreme. This spot offers 30 flavors of pie every day as well as a front-row seat to the artisans making them. The bakery also serves cannoli, cookies, and other goodies to satisfy any variety of sweet tooth.

Take a break from riding in the car by hopping aboard a train. This historic railway takes visitors back in time as
they embark on a ride through the region in 1917 coach cars pulled by diesel engines. The route traverses bridges, valleys, and the breathtaking views of Lehigh Gorge State Park.

Just outside Baltimore in Perryville, it's possible to enjoy a local brew at the same site that George Washington and Thomas Jefferson once did. This family-friendly brewery boasts a great menu, locally sourced ingredients, and a tale as old as the nation itself. Colonel John Rodgers not only hosted important heads of state here, but
he also raised the 5th Company Militia at this very site — hence
the name. From classic pub fare to filet mignon and cedar-plank salmon, there is something for every appetite at this road trip stop.

There’s a reason this destination is one of the most popular stops in the Northeast. Take a step back in time and learn about the Indigenous people and early colonizers of the region through an interactive village with period actors telling stories and teaching history year-round. A jail, apothecary, bookbinder, and blacksmith’s shop are just a few of the pieces of living history in Colonial Williamsburg.

The waterways in and around Baltimore have a long and storied history centered around industry, including hunting. At the Decoy Museum, learn all about the craft of creating decoys of waterfowl — first as a hunting tool, and now as a work of art for those living in the Chesapeake region.

Seasoned travelers are likely familiar with the National Aquarium in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, but this nearby children’s museum
is another necessary stop for families. Three floors of hands-on activities make this location a great spot to spend a few hours or
a whole day — that’s the beauty of road trips. A studio workshop provides space for creative kids to explore while the Sky Climber is a great way to stretch some muscles after several hours in the car. Bring your local memberships with you, as Port Discovery offers reciprocal admission for members of other children’s museums.

Located in a Maryland suburb near Washington DC, this unique roadside attraction has a little bit of everything. Artist Clarke Bedford has been transforming the house — as well as vehicles parked on the site — since 2005. Bedford has used antiques, scraps, and upcycled materials to create a complex living art installation in a quiet neighborhood. No matter how many times travelers stop by the Vanadu Art House, they always notice something new.

There is no shortage of history in Williamsburg, but this lesser-known landmark is worth a stop. While the outdoor museum that first featured the sculpted heads of the first 42 US presidents went bankrupt in 2010, the collection of massive carved busts was relocated to private property to preserve the history. These heads can’t be seen from the road, so you’ll need to book a tour — it’s worth it.

The rich history of Williamsburg, Virginia, is not contained to the region’s museums and national historic sites. At this 1772 tavern, servers dress in period clothing and serve classic colonial meals with a modern twist. (Think pork from Martha Washington’s family cookbook, or a 1788 recipe for roasted duck.) For young guests who may have worked up an appetite exploring the local history, the Young Patriots menu offers a selection of surefire kid-friendly hits like macaroni and cheese and chicken fritters.

Road trips continue to rise in popularity among those with a strong case of wanderlust — and especially for families with kids. Beyond the ability to set your own schedule, road trips have lots of perks. Without a flight to catch, you’re free to stop by a quirky roadside attraction or historical site, and there’s no need to wait for the captain to turn off the seatbelt sign when a potty emergency strikes. Hungry? There’s no shortage of good eats along the road, and interstate stops are typically more cost-effective than airport fare. The Northeast region of the United States is particularly great for road-tripping families. A well-planned interstate system connects a myriad of iconic attractions and eateries all within a few hours’ drive of each other. Plus, there are three Great Wolf Lodge locations that provide ideal road trip lodging, with water slides and activities perfect for squirrely kids after a day on the highway. From toddlers to teenagers, it’s easy to please all ages and interests with a bit of careful planning.
