The Most Memorable Moments from 21 Seasons of Grey’s Anatomy
So what can we expect from season 21? Catherine Fox may be hellbent on firing much of the attending staff, but we’re sure there’s more Miranda Bailey, Amelia Shepherd, and Teddy Altman in our future. As for the interns?
We’re not giving up on Lucas Adams and Simone Griffin yet. Plus, Benson Kwan just moved into the most popular house in Seattle (has that roof been fixed yet?). Watch the 21st season
on Thursday, September 26 at 10/9c on ABC and stream on Hulu. Don’t forget to scrub in!
SEASON 21
The cure for Alzheimer’s disease is back on the table when Meredith Grey believes she discovers
a correlation between the gut microbiome and the disease. The only thing is that these findings
can blow up pretty much everything doctors
know about Alzheimer’s. Even so, Amelia — and eventually Teddy — hop on board to support Meredith’s project, which was strictly prohibited by Catherine. Meredith and Amelia’s research may be right but that doesn’t stop Catherine from threatening their jobs — Teddy’s included, which, if you didn’t know, is Chief of Surgery.
SEASON 20
Finally! Finally! We spend a good portion of the season watching Bailey — with supporting guest appearances from Addison Montgomery — react to the overturning of Roe v. Wade, and what that means for health care providers across the country. Through Bailey, who opens a women's health clinic at Grey Sloan, we see the impact of this court decision — and it is this steadfast dedication from our former Chief of Surgery that gets her enough recognition to win a Catherine Fox Award, the first win by a physician for a non-surgical achievement.
SEASON 19
You read that right — Meredith is back,
healthy, and done seeing the ghosts of her past (literally) when she’s called to Minnesota per the request of Dr. David Hamilton. Ultimately, Hamilton asks Meredith to lead a project to
cure his Parkinson’s disease. This move may
seem minor in comparison to some other memorable moments this season, but it’s this temporary relocation that prompts other character arcs, like Amelia meeting (and dating) Kai Bartley
and Nick Marsh swooping in as a series regular to fall in love with our girl Mer.
SEASON 18
A season that aired during a pandemic was bound to be filled with heavy moments, but we unironically got several of levity via Meredith’s comatose visions. This liminal space — a beautiful, empty beach no less — is where she reunited with characters who had been long gone, including Mark Sloan (!), Lexie Grey (!!), George O'Malley (!!!), and Derek Shepherd (!!!!). While we knew it probably wasn’t good that Meredith’s active imagination only got more nostalgic — and exciting to watch — as her health slipped, these moments were unprecedented and gave us one last chance to see fan-favorite characters get a few last moments in the sun, literally.
SEASON 17
This was bound to happen at some point, right? Meredith and her insurance fraud may have nearly been the final nail in the coffin for her medical license, but she wasn’t the only character who made questionable, borderline illegal decisions on the show. This fact is probably what made the threat of revocation so scary. Although it was unfortunate to see Meredith face the medical board hearing, it was worth enduring in order to get to Mer’s chilling speech about those damn Burr holes and see some of her past patients make guest appearances defending her talent as a legendary surgeon.
SEASON 16
After a flighty one-night stand in Germany, Teddy returns to Grey Sloan pregnant — with Owen Hunt's child. And while you'd think this would immediately imply the two could finally make a relationship work, you'd be wrong. A love triangle between Teddy, Owen, and Tom Koracick eventually blooms, only delaying the inevitable: Owen and Teddy K-I-S-S-I-N-G.
SEASON 15
Not everyone leaves the show with a happy ending on Grey’s, but we like to believe that’s exactly what Arizona and Callie Torres get after the 14th season finale. When Arizona reunites with her former mentor, Dr. Nicole Herman, they team up to start the Robbins-Herman Center for Women’s Health in New York, where Arizona’s estranged wife Callie lives — and the place their daughter Sofia still calls home. She ultimately leaves Grey Sloan, once and for all,
to carry on her work in fetal surgery on the East Coast. We like to believe the family of three is living happily ever after, considering they were
one of the first LGBTQ+ couples on the show.
SEASON 14
Alex Karev has overstepped more than once over the course of his tenure at Grey Sloan, however, nearly beating Andrew Deluca to death takes the cake as his most extreme mistake — especially considering his rage was triggered by an innocent misunderstanding. And for a second there, we nearly saw him destroy his career and go to prison for the assault. Luckily, Deluca dropped the charges and Bailey ultimately gave Karev his job back.
SEASON 13
At the opening of the season, we see Bailey in her new role as Chief of Surgery — the first woman to ever hold the title. But no one said the job would be easy. By the end of her first day, Bailey confides in Richard Webber; she doesn’t think she’s cut out for the job. But, as he’s been wont to do, Webber tells Bailey to buck up because she can do this job, probably better than anyone. Bailey would go on to shine in the role of chief for six seasons.
SEASON 12
There is one episode we could talk about, but Grey’s fans don’t need a reminder of the tragic loss of McDreamy. Instead, let’s focus on the fact that Cristina Yang’s replacement, Maggie Pierce, turns
out to be another half sister of Meredith’s. By the end of the season, we see Meredith embrace her new family, Maggie and Derek’s sister Amelia included. With Derek gone, Meredith’s sisters become her people.
SEASON 11
The moment that rivals April Kepner’s wedding
to Matthew is Cristina saying goodbye to Seattle Grace Mercy West Grey Sloan Memorial. Jackson whisking April away from her big day was huge, but watching Cristina dance it out with “her person” one last time is a top-tier moment, especially when compounded by the nostalgia. Meredith, Karev, and Cristina were the only three surgeons left from the original intern class, and we weren’t alone in feeling the unavoidable sadness of
having to say farewell to our cardiothoracic god. Cristina feels as though her time in Seattle is unfinished and yet the taxi takes her away anyway.
SEASON 10
Not many of the nuptials on this show end well — more often than not, the couples fulfill the “’til death do us part” portion of their vows
or divorce — but Bailey and Ben Warren are the exception, not the rule. Of course, a Grey’s wedding can’t go off without a little bit of tragedy; this time it’s when Webber admits to Meredith that his wife Adele passed away from
a heart attack. On the bright side, Bailey and
Ben are still going strong in season 21.
SEASON 9
Grey’s knows how to wrap up a season with a shocking finale, and Episode 24 (“Flight”) is no exception. Just when you think the Seattle Grace Mercy West doctors couldn’t possibly undergo more trauma, the private plane holding at least half of the show’s main characters crashes. Luckily, most of them survive — heavy emphasis on most — but it’s the aftermath of this accident that sets up future plotlines for everyone, from Arizona losing her leg to Derek nearly losing 20 percent of his hand function.
SEASON 8
We were a little worried we’d never make it to this day, but we did it! Well, Callie and Arizona did it — with the help of Bailey as their officiant and Sloan giving Callie away. Eventually, even Callie’s dad makes a surprise appearance for the father-daughter dance. All it took was one near-fatal car accident for these two to finally face the facts: They were meant to be. It also marked the first LGBTQ+ wedding on the series.
SEASON 7
Grey’s knows how to leave audiences wanting more, and the two-part season finale delivered. This show is at its strongest when the entire cast is undergoing collective stress — we know, it’s cruel but true — and this storyline includes a hospital lockdown, an active shooter, and the near-death of Derek and Karev. Not to mention the actual deaths of two former Mercy West residents, Meredith’s miscarriage, and the personal horror film Bailey endured in her patient’s room. This was just one of the many episodes that played a crucial role
in the arcs of multiple characters, if not all.
SEASON 6
A lot of heartbreaking things happen in season 5 — Izzie Stevens gets cancer, George dies, Derek becomes so depressed from the loss of
a patient he almost quits surgery altogether, Owen’s PTSD makes its first appearance. But one happy thing we get is that Derek and Meredith get engaged (in the elevator) and then exchange vows on a Post-It note.
SEASON 5
Meredith has no shortage of familial drama on
the show, but Lexie, her half-sister on her father’s side, was the first blood relative she couldn’t resist opening up to, at least not for long. Eventually, the two would become roommates as well as coworkers. Lexie may not have been a descendent of Ellis Grey, but she was impressive in her own right. That photographic memory? A moment of silence for all her potential.
SEASON 4
Even before she’s accidentally knocked into
the water while triaging at the crash site of a catastrophic ferry boat accident, Meredith is not doing well. Things only get more harrowing after Derek pulls her from the water. We spend the rest of the episode watching Meredith encounter other characters who had tragically passed on the show, thus far, including her dog, Doc. By the time she wakes up, alive and at a normal body temp, her award-winning surgeon mother, Ellis Grey, is dead.
SEASON 3
When Meredith Grey says she has a feeling, you listen. At least, that’s what this two-part episode taught Grey’s fans (and Seattle Grace staff). When a paramedic (played by Christina Ricci) arrives at the hospital with her hand lodged inside a patient’s chest — who is in critical condition — the last thing any of the doctors thought was that her hand was on a bomb, and the only thing keeping it from detonating.
In true Meredith fashion, the fearless first-year intern takes Ricci’s place, putting her life at risk. There are a lot of hold-your-breath moments in the series, but this was the first for many.
SEASON 2
Plenty of other medical dramas had a place on TV before Grey’s aired, but few introduced us to first-year surgical interns like Meredith Grey, Cristina Yang, George O’Malley, Izzie Stevens, and Alex Karev, who made appendectomies and on-call rooms as entertaining as they were and, dare we say, sexy? And while plenty of these characters have come and gone (and come back again), the original cast set the tone for the relationships Grey’s would construct over the next two decades.
SEASON 1
Senior Designer: Allie Pakrosnis
who’s now entering their 21st season, but we can speak
for the fans — because we knew the medical drama would be
a hit from the start. After all, a show that can equally entertain you with a storyline about a love triangle and one about a man who swallowed doll heads is a show that’s built to last. As the years go on, the cases and cast evolve, but the heart of this show remains the same. It’s the major milestones in these characters’ lives that keep us hanging around and tuning in season after season.
As we get ready to see what drama unfolds in Season 21 — which premieres Thursday, September 26 at 10/9c on ABC and streaming on Hulu — here’s a reminder of the show’s pivotal impact and standout moments through the years.
henever a show’s cast is asked whether or not they knew their series would be successful while filming its early seasons, most of them say no, of course not. We can’t speak for the Grey’s Anatomy cast,
