What came first, the chicken or the egg?
This question has been robbing people of sleep
for centuries. And today? Today, researchers no
longer have any doubt. Evolution created the egg
much earlier! In time, the chicken hatched out of it. But how does a chicken egg evolve in the first place? Let's take a look inside the chicken coop. Or to put
it a better way, let's visit the hen!
A great
source of vitamins
Scientists agree that the egg is nature's most
perfect invention. And they're quite right!
The innocuous, fragile egg contains
all the elements necessary for the evolution of life.
A menu
that gives you wings
A good and caring farmer ensures that his hens
get healthy feed. This primarily includes quality cereals
such as wheat, barley and oats, as these have a lot of energy.
Hens also like feed meal, and have absolutely nothing against
carrots or beetroot. They also love greens – alfalfa, clover, nettles.
And this is how the finished egg is laid by the hen!
The egg then continues its journey to the end of the oviduct
where the final element, the shell, is added.
First, the yolk (which evolves from a tiny egg cell)
develops in the body of the hen. The fertilized yolk then travels through a special channel, the oviduct, where
it is "encased" in egg white along the way.
From cell to chicken
On the last stage of its journey, the egg yolk and egg white
are reliably packed in this shell, like in an envelope. The shell may appear fragile and delicate, but inside the hen's body
it is unbreakable.
Do you want proof? When the egg is fertilized by a rooster,
it is transformed into a real chick within 21 days at a temperature
of 104 degrees. What a phenomenon! You have to admit, don't you? That's why the egg has been a symbol of new life for centuries. The egg
is also a fantastic source of vitamins on your plate.
Hidden under the delicate shell is the power of the nutrients
and vitamins that are responsible for the proper functioning
of the human body. The egg also contains lots of protein and calcium
(to strengthen muscles and bones), while at the same time being low in calories and, most of all, has surprisingly little cholesterol, although the opposite has often been claimed. So it's really healthy!
And for strong shells and bones, the farmer feeds them with
crushed eggshells, mussels or fodder chalk. Of course, they get fresh
clean water to drink. This is a recipe for a happy, stress-free hen
and a healthy, happy egg.
You'd probably like to know how a free-range village hen lives.
The answer is: like a bee in clover! First and foremost, it spends
the whole day outdoors, nibbling on grasses, picking out bugs
and pebbles. And its natural home is a clean, well-kept henhouse
to which it returns of its own accord in the evening or when
it wants to lay an egg.

Did you know that ...
...hens have a good memory and can distinguish between
up to 100 other hens in a flock?
...the domestic chicken is one of the closest living relatives
of the Tyrannosaurus?
...a rooster in love looks after his hen, taking her under
his wings to protect her from the rain?
...the older the hen gets, the bigger the eggs she lays?
...when hard-boiled eggs are difficult to peel,
that's a sign that they're fresh?
...people who were cursed used the egg as a good luck charm
and even used it to break the curse?
...to check whether an egg is fresh, you can simply put it in
a container with water? Old eggs rotate when they are immersed and float to the surface. Fresh eggs, on the other hand,
lie motionless on the bottom of the vessel.
...a pale egg yolk is a sign that the hen was fed less
greens, but was given cereal grains instead,
which are mainly available in winter?
