‘All farmers are caring, patient people,’ says Neil, our carrot grower in East Anglia, where the soft sandy soil and temperate climate are perfect for growing as a carrot takes with crunch. And with 25 years farming experience, patience is his middle name when it comes to growing: ‘A carrot will take 120 days to grow to maturity,’ says Neil. But when it comes to harvesting, speed is the key. ‘For all carrots, getting them sorted and packed as quickly as possible means the best possible product.’ In most cases, this means Neil will be harvesting as early as 6am with the crop packed and on the shelves in 24 hours. Now that’s dedication!

The Coop-Capressa in Côte d'Ivoire, West Africa, is a cooperative of some of our best cocoa producers. As well as farming good quality products, Capressa works to the Fairtrade Standards, which include protection of workers’ rights and the environment. But our support goes beyond just buying their cocoa. Our Fairtrade commitment supports training from effective business strategy to tackling gender equality and climate change resilience. In 2021 alone, they were able to plant 15,550 shade trees to protect their valuable cocoa crops. Thanks to the Fairtrade Premium, they will continue to make these investments for the future.

We also generated over £1.7 million in Fairtrade Premium in 2021, with over £1.2 million of that going straight to cocoa farmers and workers globally in lower income countries. Very Berry hot cross bun cheesecake loaf
To serve, carefully invert onto a serving plate and remove the tin and lining paper. Cut into slices.
4.
Grease and line a loaf tin measuring approximately 20cm x 9cm on the base. Slice open the hot cross buns and use a rolling pin to slightly flatten the tops and bases (you will need more tops than bases for this recipe, so you can toast and butter the left-over bases as a chef’s perk!) Line the base of the loaf tin with three tops, placing them cross side down and making sure they butt up to each other so there are no gaps. Line the two longer sides with more tops, making sure that they wedge each other in without gaps. Finally use two bottoms at either of the short ends.
Make sure the buns are pressed into the side of the tin and then fill the space in the centre with the cheesecake mixture, smoothing it with the back of a spoon to ensure there are no air pockets. Top the filling with three of the remaining hot cross bun tops and the trim the edging buns so they are level with the base, if necessary. Wrap the tin tightly in clingfilm and chill in the fridge overnight.
For the cheesecake filling, put the cream cheese, sugar and vanilla extract in a bowl and beat until combined. In a separate bowl, whisk the whipped cream to soft peaks. Gently fold the whipped cream through the cream cheese mixture and then fold through the blueberries and lemon zest for .
9 Very Berry hot cross buns 200g cream cheese 50g caster sugar 1 tsp Madagascan vanilla extract 150ml double cream 125g blueberries Zest of 1 lemon

Nothing says spring has sprung like daffodils. Glorious Great British daffodils. Standing tall. Standing proud. 100 varieties. 40 million bunches. A carpet of yellow. Freshly picked on local farms across the country from Cornwall to Scotland. Freshly packed for all-season quality. Freshly produced by those who pride themselves on all-year bulb and crop rotation. Because vases up and down the land await you. We salute you - our mellow, yellow friend - the daffodil.
Cardiff-based charity, runs a food bank and opens warm spaces to support those in the local area. Breakfast clubs. Affordable family entertainment. Much-needed access to a safe space. Just a few examples of the work they do to help tackle hunger, prevent loneliness and promote wellbeing within the community. In fact, they’re one of the many charities now coined as ‘Warm Banks’. But as the cost-of-living crisis continues to rise, the number of those in need continues to grow. Being awarded a Lidl Community Fund grant of £5000 is helping them to invest in more food, better-equipped storage facilities and additional resources so they can plan for the future.
Together with Neighbourly, our annual Community Fund is helping support local charities with everything from fridges and freezers to refurbs and refits.

"We are extremely grateful for this grant. Splott has always been known as a place where poverty existed, but we have seen a notable increase of working food poverty and a greater divide between the ‘haves and have-nots’. Since receiving the grant, we’re able to help more of our community with breakfast clubs, food, necessities and warm spaces and our community is eternally grateful.”
Angela Bullard, Founder of Splott Community Volunteers said:
Splott Community Volunteers,
The cost-of-living crisis. Ongoing inflation. Covid. Three huge reasons why we launched our £500k Lidl Community Fund. And three huge reasons why we will keep providing it, every year. Working with our partner Neighbourly, these funds are given as grants to local charities and community groups in need. They range from £500 to £5000. So far, they’ve helped secure immediate access to food, improve food storage and refurbish food preparation areas or premises. Together, we’ve helped 286,735 people. Together, we’ve supported 398 charities and good causes. Together, we’re tackling hunger in the community.
