"Securing a strong position on the ProCure 23 framework has been the result of 18 months of hard work, bringing together a team of experts with extensive experience in the sector and with previous iterations of the framework.
The NHS faces many challenges in 2022, which will test the UK construction industry around net zero carbon, modern methods of construction, and incorporating smart and digital technologies. This framework, with its focus on collaboration, is the perfect opportunity for us to bring our innovative, flexible approach, drawing on our experience from other sectors, to deliver on these challenges."

OUR WELLBEING SOLUTIONS
To increase wellbeing and outstanding levels of care, a hospital or healthcare facility must be well designed and futureproofed to create a positive environment. The building must support this through biophilic principles, enabling access for all, providing fresh air and natural light, quiet, dignified spaces for treatment and recovery. The building must provide comfort, security and support, the patient journey should be seamless whether that’s through smart and digital technology, reducing anxiety or designed for ease of use and clear way finding.
NET ZERO CARBON
SMART DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY
MMC AND STANDARDISATION
NET ZERO CARBON
In 2020, the NHS became the world’s first health system to commit to delivering a Net Zero Carbon service and set out challenging targets to help it deliver on its goal. The NHS is the most significant public sector contributor to climate change in the UK representing more than 5% of the UK’s total carbon footprint; around 27 million tonnes of carbon each year in Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions. Notably, the NHS estates and its supporting facilities services comprises 15% of this total carbon emissions profile.
We are proactive partners that have the capacity and capability to develop solutions for the lifecycle of the asset. We recently invested in a R&D project to achieve Net Zero Carbon in Operation on our schools in collaboration with the DfE. In 2021, Wates formed the Decarbonising Health Partnership (DHEP) with a multi-disciplinary team of built environment specialists including Arup and HKS Architects to develop a process that we can use to help NHS Trusts to develop their decarbonisation strategy for their estates, in particular their retained estates.
SMART DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY
We are acutely aware of the NHS’ digital transformation programme and are in direct dialogue with NHS E&I and their established ecosystem partners to become a recognised delivery partner within the NHS Digital’s ecosystem.
Our team can offer Smart-ready solutions to projects now that can be adapted, enhanced or expanded in the future by:
MMC AND STANDARDISATION
We use Modern Methods of Construction to deliver projects faster, more safely, and to a high standard with added value.
INTELLIGENT CONTRACTING
We know there’s a challenge in the sector when it comes to digital. As the NHS focuses on moving to a coherent smart building digital system, we have advanced techniques to develop our ideas, innovative approaches to communicate and articulate the value we create for our customers, and data to inform our decision making.
Digital twinning is at the heart of the delivery and operational process, and a true enabler for maximising the use of modern methods of construction as well as reducing embedded carbon and carbon use in operation.
We are currently collaborating with the NHS preferred supply chain, alongside our own, to trial different systems to ensure an open ecosystem that will drive transformational change.
DIGITAL ENGINEERING
ADAPTING FOR THE FUTURE
We understand that the components of developing a good healthcare facility are constantly changing, with ever increasing demands from delivery models, the environment and the threat of future healthcare emergencies.
Facilities must be designed and built to deliver the best possible care today and for the future. They need to be flexible and adaptable enough to enable future change, responding to shifting clinical needs and demographics. More pertinent now than ever, they must be robust enough to manage pandemics, major trauma events and natural disasters. This was critical in the delivery of a 176-bed intensive care unit for The Royal London Hospital in 2020, boosting capacity for the treatment of COVID-19 patients.

Part of a large housing regeneration, the primary care community health hub in Camden promotes health and wellbeing for the local community. Wates was involved from RIBA Stage 1 with our own design team to co-design the project with all relevant stakeholders. The project was completed in Summer 2022.

social value
Delivering social value is intrinsic to our purpose and our goals of being a progressive and responsible employer. We’re big believers that business can be a force for good and we’re committed to leaving a lasting legacy in the communities we work.
Our three-part social value strategy is rooted in our belief that how we do business, is as important as what we do. It aims to challenge inequality, inspire and educate young people, and support and scale social enterprise. From procuring with purpose to ensure we deliver wider impact to spending £25m with social enterprises, by putting the community’s needs at the heart of what we do, we achieve so much more.
Project:
With the UK entering a national lockdown on Monday 23rd March, the decision to turn the eight-year dormant 14th/15th floors of Whitechapel’s’ busy Royal London Hospital into Covid-19 wards came a few days later, with Wates contracted by the Friday. Speed, efficiency and collaboration were essential to deliver works in an unprecedented timeline. Alongside time, the project had many challenges. Access was restricted by just two lifts for all materials and people (while maintaining a 2-metre distance), and 12 subcontractors needed engaging instantly. Through an innovative, circular communication structure involving client, design team and supply chain we achieved the seemingly impossible: we were live on site in just five weeks, knowing the quicker we do the job, the more lives we save.

Robotic Pharmacy
Winchester
Project:
A new robotic pharmacy fit-out of the Burrell Wing at Winchester’s Royal Hampshire County Hospital. The £4m refurb includes new administration office space, meeting rooms and an automated dispensing system as well as the formation of a new shell for the hospital radio.
Work commenced in 2020 during Covid-19 restrictions when Wates Smartspace was appointed by Hampshire Hospitals Foundation NHS Trust to deliver the fit-out works. The project was procured via the Crown Commercial Services (CCS) Construction and Associated Services Agreement, which is designed for the use of all public sector bodies to commission the construction and maintenance of schools, hospitals, universities, prisons, housing and offices.

Procured through the Crown Commercial Services (CCS) Construction and Associated Services Agreement, our team began the first phase of works in February 2022 and concluded works to five subsequent phases in April 2023.
The project was designed and carried out to make way for revolutionised lab equipment to better serve the hospital’s haematology, biochemistry, cellular pathology and microbiology services and to build in more capacity to cater for increased demand on the NHS. Not only this, the project has created further office, meeting and storage space for key consultants alongside new ramp access for deliveries and overall improved aesthetic.
