How Dr. Vivek Murthy Became the Unofficial Czar of Loneliness
CHANGEMAKERS 2024
Chloe Metzger, Deputy Editor
Let’s just say it: The vibes have been *off* recently. Collectively, we aren’t doing so hot. One in two Americans have reported feeling lonely, which is a statistic that, frankly, sucks. Despite living in an unprecedented era of hyperconnectivity, we are more disconnected than ever, and research shows our well-being is suffering because of it. Unfortunately, the “answer” to loneliness isn’t as simple as togetherness (ask any introvert in the middle of a crowded party or a new mom nursing twins at 3 a.m.). Isolation looks different for all of us, and there’s no prescriptive path to finding and fostering connection—which is exactly what Well+Good’s Changemaker Issue is here to address.
According to Surgeon General (and 2024 Changemaker) Vivek Murthy, MD, we’re officially in a loneliness epidemic. Our collective need for connection has become so critical that it’s acted as a rallying cry for this year’s list of Changemakers, mobilizing activists from Hollywood to the White House to make noise, sound alarms, and get sh*t done. The leaders below are redefining community and advocating for connection in all of its forms, not just with friends, family, and strangers, but also with ourselves. Because ultimately, loneliness isn’t an on-off switch—it’s a dial that our 2024 Changemakers are working to steadily turn until the next statistic we’re part of is a happy one.
Welcome, friends, to the new age of connection.
