There is no “well-being” if there is no, well, being. It’s not overly dramatic to say that humanity’s very existence—let alone our ability to live our happiest, healthiest lives—hinges on the choices we make today, tomorrow, and in the years to come. Will we choose to actively make the planet a better place than it is now?

Let’s start with the facts: Global surface temperatures have risen 1.1°C above pre-Industrial levels of the late 1800s. This is serious; for decades, scientists and world leaders have stressed the critical need to keep warming levels below 2°C. After this threshold, extreme climate events will increase exponentially—think of the headline-making wildfires in California, droughts in Eastern Africa, and flooding in Australia… and then imagine conditions worse than that. Human life as we know it would not be possible.
But here’s one more fact: All hope is not lost. Not yet.
The Climate Issue is our call to action: With these stories, we’re calling attention to the ways climate change is impacting our environments, communities, and bodies—and we’re calling on you to roll up your sleeves. Because one common refrain of our reporting was that we can still make a difference. People who really, really know their s**t (scientists, researchers, activists, inventors) repeatedly told us that individual actions and large-scale, systemic changes are both necessary in order to preserve our planet; so who are we to disagree?
A year ago, I spoke with climate scientist Katharine Hayoe and shared that one of Well+Good’s core values is our belief that “we cannot be well if the planet is not.” In response, she offered me a graceful edit: “But it's not literally about the planet. That hunk of rock—that's going to be orbiting the sun long after we're gone. It's about all of the living things on the planet that provide every single thing that we need,” she said. “And so, the health of the planet *is* our health.”
Her words have stayed with me, echoing between my ears each time I reach for the plastic-free option, decide to walk instead of hail a cab, or cast my vote for legislation that will mitigate the harms of climate change. We care for our bodies one choice at a time; protecting the Earth’s health is no different.
