With holiday party season upon us, properly removing your makeup has never been more important, Dr. Nazarian says. “One of the classic errors of skin care is not cleansing your face before bedtime,” she says. “Since skin renews itself best at night, leaving it exposed to the free radicals it accumulated throughout the day only perpetuates skin aging and damage.”
It’s not just wrinkles and an uneven skin tone you’re helping to prevent, Dr. Nazarian notes. Leaving your makeup on overnight can increase your chance of acne breakouts as a result of bacteria and oils mixing with your makeup, and even rosacea flare-ups because of extended exposure to free radicals and micropollutants that get trapped under your makeup, increasing the risk of inflammatory skin conditions, she says.
Even the most stubborn makeup (you know, like that pesky waterproof mascara!) will melt off with the purity one-step facial cleanser, along with any dirt, oil, or skin-damaging pollutants on your face. Don’t worry—it won’t leave your skin dry like makeup wipes or harsh removers can, thanks to its gentle, hydrating formula.
Some people live for sweater weather, while others start counting down the days to summer as soon as the first chill of autumn arrives. No matter where you fall on that spectrum, one thing’s for sure: Your skin is *not* winter’s biggest fan.
It’s science—your skin barrier (aka the outermost layer of skin that protects against environmental stressors) reflects the level of humidity of the air around it, so during the winter when humidity drops inside and outside, your skin is more likely to dry out, according to board-certified dermatologist Rachel Nazarian, MD, FAAD.
That’s why it’s so important to sub your usual products for ones that make quenching your skin’s thirst a top priority—like the philosophy purity one-step facial cleanser, a one-of-a-kind cleanser built like a moisturizer to wash away impurities while supporting the skin barrier.
But what else can you do to keep your skin hydrated and at its healthiest this winter? Dr. Nazarian has three winter skin-care rules for warding off dryness and irritation, no matter how low the temperatures drop.

3 Golden Rules for Winter Skin Care'
Effortlessly remove stubborn makeup
Rule 1:
The skin barrier that we mentioned earlier? Protecting it should be your top priority during the winter since it determines the overall health of your body’s biggest organ, Dr. Nazarian says. “Having a healthy skin barrier is one of the most important ways that you can maintain moisture within the skin and prevent moisture loss,” she says. So basically, the more you care for your skin barrier, the more moisturized your skin will be, even during colder weather.
“The healthy [skin] barrier is made up of natural oils, a specific narrow pH, and a plethora of bacteria and microflora that improve the defenses of your skin from the outside environment,” she says. “A damaged or weakened barrier can lead to irritation, like itching or even infection. It can also inflame underlying skin conditions—like acne, rosacea, and eczema.”
Dr. Nazarian says one easy way to protect your skin barrier is by switching out your harsh cleanser for a more gentle formula. “Anything that strips too much moisture from the skin, or is highly abrasive can weaken the barrier,” she says. “An ideal cleanser should remove surface oils, environmental buildup, dirt, and bacteria—but not remove too much of the healthy oils.” Not only is the
purity one-step facial cleanser gentle on the skin, but it’s also formulated specifically to respect and protect your skin barrier, unlike traditional cleansers.
Follow these three winter skin-care rules to keep your skin hydrated and glowy all winter long, and who knows—you might even become one of those people who looks forward to the temperature dropping.

Philosophy
During the winter, you want to be especially careful that the ingredients in your favorite products aren’t working against your skin in the winter months. Drying ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid might work for your skin in the summer, but over the winter it’s often best to steer clear. Additionally, Dr. Nazarian suggests decreasing how often you use products containing retinol. “Using retinol in the wintertime can be problematic because our skin requires a little bit more sebum to remain hydrated and healthy and strengthen the barrier,” she says.
Dr. Nazarian recommends using products that contain glycerin to maintain your skin’s moisture. “Glycerin has the ability to improve the strength of the stratum corneum (the top layer of skin), improve hydration in the skin, and even decrease irritation that’s often caused by dry skin and cold winter temperatures,” she says.
Glycerin is one of the key moisturizing ingredients in the purity one-step facial cleanser, which has been clinically proven to prevent skin dehydration. The other essential ingredient—meadowfoam seed oil, a true “hero oil” packed with ceramides and a natural antioxidant—serves multiple important purposes when it comes to winter skin care: neutralizing free radical damage from the surrounding environment and reinforcing the lipid (skin) barrier, Dr. Nazarian says.
