The first step to running? Lacing up your sneakers. The second step? Well, that depends on who you ask. Some runners might answer with “turn on the treadmill,” while others will tell you to “hit the pavement.” And that’s the beauty of running: There’s no wrong answer.
But despite the choose-your-own-adventure nature of the sport, there’s one thing that every runner needs: The right support, whether that’s the perfectly cushioned sneakers for your stride, or the community that encourages you to keep putting one foot in front of the other.
In celebration of the new Nike InfinityRN 4—which feels like a hug for your feet—we’re inviting you into our runners’ circle with all the tips and tricks, shoe recs, and inspiring stories you’ll need to feel your most uplifted, no matter what your running surface of choice is. Meet our support squad below and find out how to bolster your running practice—mind, body, and sole.

When Alejandra Castillo was young, she dreamed of finishing a marathon, but doubted herself because she didn’t fit the stereotypical “runner’s body” mold. The turning point for her? Joining a local running group that connects people from all backgrounds through community, street art, and running where she fell in love with the spirit of teamwork. With three marathons under her belt and a fourth coming up, she now feels empowered to help others reach their goals, no matter what the haters say.

Carla Anguino wasn’t instantly in love with running. A close friend insisted she give it a chance, and when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, she decided to train for a marathon with a few different running clubs in the LA area. She still didn’t see herself as a “real runner,” but that same friend convinced her she had what it took to be the director of operations for a nonprofit that serves as a safe haven for inner-city students that gives them support to develop as individuals and runners. Becoming the director of operations, Anguino’s self-proclaimed dream job, has changed her life.

If you ask her friends, they’ll tell you Megan Ono was already running in the womb. Movement was always a joyful part of Ono’s life growing up, but it wasn’t until she laced up with a local running club in 2018 that she tried her hand at long-distance running. There, she found a safe space of connection. Now as a run club captain, Ono leads weekly runs as well as social impact efforts that contribute to the club’s mission of giving back to the community.
