Yourself
Need a reset after the last year? So. Much. Same.
But here’s the thing: Taking time for self care doesn’t have to be a lengthy endeavor. You can have a whole wellness moment even if you’ve only got a few minutes—whether that’s combing a Hair Food mask through your strands or throwing a quick solo dance party (or both!). In partnership with Hair Food, we challenged three wellness lovers to do
just that—and in turn, uncover exactly how to make a time-out feel like a next-level wellness treatment. Consider this your official guide for how to unwind, get grounded, and nourish yourself, from tresses to toes. Prepare to treat—ahem, treat(ment) yourself.
The Ingredients
Each superfood-focused formula is designed to actually do what the label says it will do, all with high-quality ingredients you’ll heart—and none of the ones that you don’t (that means no sulfates, dyes,
parabens, or mineral oil, and everything is certified PETA cruelty free). And because each formula is inspired by simple recipes you’d whip up in your own kitchen, you can nourish your hair in the same way you’d nourish your body—whether that’s with refreshing avocado, rich coconut oil, or juicy pear. How’s that for head-to-toe wellness?

For her, refueling looks like blocking daily time on her calendar to go for a walk around her neighborhood, grab a tea from her favorite shop, or do a quick yoga flow to help her feel re-energized, grounded, and present. “Physically, yoga helps loosen up my body and alleviate minor aches and pains. Mentally, it’s an opportunity to zone out and quite literally flow. After a flow I feel light and open.”
The ‘little’ moments we take for ourselves are the ones that end up making the biggest difference in the long run.

“Because the product is so light, my hair didn’t feel weighed down, which is super important to me since I have curly hair and I always want my curls to be defined,” Pridgett says. “Taking those few minutes reminded me that even these small acts are a way to take care of myself and show up for myself.”

As an always-on editor based in New York City, Tamara Pridgett has come to value the power of short moments of me-time in the midst of the hustle of her busy life. “The ‘little’ moments we take for ourselves are the ones that end up making the biggest difference in the long run, in my opinion,” she says. “If we aren’t consistently checking in with ourselves and refueling ourselves, it’ll be impossible to show up in all the ways we want fully.”
First thing’s first: If you’re going to give yourself a hair treatment but don’t have a ton of time, you’re going to want to make sure you’re relying on ingredients that will give you the most oomph. That’s where Hair Food’s line of superfood-inspired products come in clutch.
Another way she prioritizes simple acts of self care? By sectioning off her hair and smoothing Hair Food Turmeric & Almond Oil Detangling Milk onto her long, curly tresses after a shower. Infused with turmeric and almond oil, the non-sticky detangler nourishes hair to leave it feeling soft and shiny, while also allowing for defined curls—and feeling like a total spa treatment.
Naturally, her self-care “snack breaks” involve food (she is a dietitian, after all), and she finds peace in whipping up something nourishing and devoting her full attention to eating it—rather than scrolling through her phone the whole time.

Consider these moments bite-size. “Just like how we would take a snack break to refuel ourselves, small self-care breaks are equivalent to the food version of ‘snacks’ throughout our day to help us mentally power through our always growing to-do list,” she says.
Running your own business is the definition of constant hustle, and May Zhu, RDN, founder of Nutrition Happens, can attest to the need to avoid burnout. “As a society, we are wired to go 100 percent full speed all day, everyday,” she says. “I’m a big fan of intentionally carving out small breaks throughout the day to reset and just breathe.”

May’s Pear, Avocado, and Walnut Toast
1 slice sourdough
1/4 avocado, sliced
1/2 pear, sliced
Handful of microgreens
1 Tbsp each of walnut + crumbled feta
Salt and pepper to taste + drizzle of honey
“Our bodies optimize digestion when we’re relaxed,” she says. “Cooking (even if it’s something super simple!) and taking the time to enjoy a meal with intention is one of my small acts of self care.”
In addition to her food-focused nourishment, Zhu also considers nourishing her hair a welcome break in her day. Her routine goes like this: Shampoo with Hair Food White Nectarine & Pear Color Product Shampoo, condition with Hair Food White Nectarine & Pear Color Product Conditioner, and finish with Hair Food Avocado & Argan Oil Smoothing Hair Mask for extra hydration. “Anyone who knows me knows that having a good hair day is...an instant mood and confidence boost for me,” she says.
“Even before I dried and styled, my hair instantly had a shinier glow to it, and afterwards my locks definitely felt and looked so much healthier,” she says. “I’m a huge multitasker as is, so being able to give my hair a little spa treatment (while getting dressed to my favorite songs at the same time) was the missing piece of my self-care routine.”
Alex Taylor, Well+Good Associate Editor
The Practice
“I always feel so proud and fulfilled when I complete an outfit—it’s really gratifying watching what feels like random pieces of stuff flying out of my closet come together to look just like me,” Taylor says. “And my happiness-boosting playlist has the ability to put me in a good mood within minutes, so they’re the one-two self-care punch that always gets the job done.”
When she abruptly switched from spending an hour commuting into the office to working from her living room, Well+Good editor Alex Taylor began to realize how much her solo time on the train had helped her feel re-centered each morning. So, she’s started to carve out a dedicated mood-boosting moment each day by getting dressed while throwing a single-song dance party.

To add a little extra self-care spice to her daily well-being moment, she started including styling her hair in her get-dressed routine. After showering and towel-drying her hair, she applies Hair Food Manuka Honey & Hemp Extract Damage Recovery Serum. Blended with the essence of hemp and honey, it rejuvenates lifeless, damaged hair, making it a great solution for dry or split ends that could use a healthy shine boost.
