As an esthetician, teaching others self love through skin care is Shani Hillian’s expertise—but it took her time to embrace this herself. “I now know that perfection is an illusion and an unattainable goal,” she says. “I cultivate confidence with pure acceptance that whatever I’m experiencing in that moment will always pass.” And when it comes to her beauty routine, she sticks to simple steps that help her live that mantra.

Shani sees her minimal, ingredients-driven approach to skin care as a way to honor herself and her heritage while setting an example for her daughter. “I'm a first generation American born to Jamaican parents,” she says. “Skin care was always more about the health of your skin. Since having my daughter, I’ve become even more intentional with my self-care rituals because I want her to know these rituals are cultural and a part of our total well-being.”
Shani cares for her skin with accessible products made with natural ingredients, from oil-free moisturizer to brightening eye cream (and she’s saving on all her favorites at Walmart’s Beauty Glow-Up Event, now through April 21 and April 16 for select products). As for your essentials? They might differ from hers—and that’s a good thing. “We are ever-evolving beings,” she says, so your skin-care routine should be, too.

I truly believe there is no one way to partake in a beauty ritual. It can be multi-changing, as life is, and that’s amazing.
Shani’s outlook on beauty has evolved in her adulthood. “Imperfection…is beautiful, and it tells a story—your unique story,” she says. To cultivate self care in her everyday routine, she sets the vibe with accessories like fresh-scented soy candles and luxe silk headbands. “Beauty is truly a ritual in self love,” she says. “Every day is a new opportunity to take care of my skin and honor myself.”

To me, beauty means feeling good about yourself in every aspect, whether or not you have on makeup, wear nice clothes, or [have] designer shoes. It’s about empowering yourself, no matter what others might say or think.
