The worst brings our best®.
That’s The Silver Lining.
West Bend Mutual Fire Insurance Company was formed the following year because local business men wanted to protect their property from the dangers of fire and lightning at the lowest possible cost. They formed a mutual insurance company, one in which policyholders insure one another. Even then we began to show that something good can come from something bad.
The first policy was written for the West Bend Brewing Company and went into effect
May 1, 1894. The company continued to grow and become more financially stable. Within 15 years, West Bend Mutual Fire Insurance Company was housed in its own office on Hickory Street.
More growth in the 1930s and 40s led to expansion into states outside of Wisconsin, including Illinois, Minnesota, Indiana, and Iowa. This also precipitated a move in 1940 to a larger office on Sixth Avenue.
Adding more lines of business, including casualty insurance, resulted in still more growth. Soon our company began offering homeowners insurance, providing families with a wide range of coverages on one policy at considerably less money than what it would take to purchase them separately.
While we changed our name to West Bend Mutual Insurance Company in 1957, we didn’t change the way we did business, and the company continue to grow. By 1960, we moved again to a new headquarters on Main Street. It was triple the size of its Sixth Avenue location.
In the 1980s and 90s, West Bend Mutual Insurance continued to grow, and introduced the Home and Highway® policy which combines coverages for home, vehicles, and more on one policy. More programs for businesses, like woodworkers and metalworkers, were also introduced.
By 1991, we moved yet again to a new location on 18th Avenue. Eight years later, we introduced our new specialty division, NSI, located in Middleton, Wisconsin.
In 2003, West Bend celebrated a significant milestone ... $1 billion in assets!
Argent, our monoline workers’ compensation division, was introduced in 2010 in Waukesha,
By 2016, we celebrated another milestone ... $1 billion in premium!
