A hunter’s relationship with feral hogs and coyotes can be complicated.
On one hand, hunting these predators can provide a level of excitement and intensity that is incomparable to any other pursuit, and one of them can provide great table fare (hint: it’s not the canine). On the other hand, their very existence can prove detrimental to farmlands and wildlife if
not effectively managed.

Unlike coyotes, feral hogs are surprisingly not native to North America. They were introduced to our country roughly five to six centuries ago, and have been wreaking havoc ever since. While hog populations have been mostly segregated to the south, their numbers have boomed astronomically in recent years, allowing these pests to cover more and more ground. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, feral hogs are responsible for over $1.5 billion in crop damage each year—and that number is growing annually.
While coyotes have a much longer history in the U.S. than feral hogs, they can still significantly disrupt an ecosystem if not managed effectively by hunters. Coyotes are predators, preying mostly on smaller game like rodents, birds, and even small- to medium-sized mammals such as young or weakened whitetail deer. Without a strong management program in place, coyote populations can quickly explode, causing increased predation and creating an imbalance of the wildlife in any given ecosystem.

GEN 5
Recording hunts isn't just about reliving the thrill— it's about understanding the game. Analyzing an animal's reaction post-shot can offer insights into its probable distance, the time needed before initiating a track, and most importantly, if the shot was lethal.
A few months ago I was doing some hog damage control on a friend's ranch down in Texas.
We had set up just on the edge of a pond and a thick patch of sagebrush, where the neighbor had said he had seen a big drove of them just the day before. After about an hour of sitting in the Texas summer heat, a small group of boars walked out at about 100 yards. I was able to locate the biggest (and likely the most destructive), and squeezed off a perfectly broadside shot. I was certain of my shot—but the hunt revealed no trace of the boar. Not even a drop of blood.
Ever wonder why Michael Jordan is hailed as the greatest NBA player of all time? He has reportedly viewed more game films than any other player in the history of the league. Film allows athletes to go back and analyze their performance, learn from their mistakes, and improve. The same principle applies to hunting—but it takes the right equipment to be really effective.
Watching film of your hunts is great, but it’s the small details that can make the biggest improvements for your hunting success. Reliable, high-quality recording equipment is essential, and the ThOR 5 XD by ATN tops my list for its unmatched video quality and state-of-the-art recording tech.
Beyond its video quality, the ThOR 5 XD offers a recoil activated video sensor, eliminating the fuss of manual recording during crucial moments. This scope also has a video resolution of 1280 at 60fps, which has set the standard for its class all across the market. Its integrated ballistic calculator ensures that shots factor in wind speed, distance, and angle, setting hunters up for success no matter the conditions. As the adage goes, "You’re only as good as your gear." Investing in top-notch equipment has undeniably leveled up my skills as a sportsman—and much like ATN’s products, I’m continuing to improve.
While most kids were watching Saturday morning cartoons, my younger self
was captivated by hunting videos. I’d spend hours watching VHS tapes of my role models hunting coyotes, white tail, and other big game animals. (In fact, I still have most of those tapes on my shelf today—just no VHS player to play them.) Back then, recording hunts was a relatively innovative idea, demanding bulky equipment and an extra set of hands to help film. Today, the internet is rife with hunting videos. From seasoned pros with years of experience to enthusiastic beginners trying to make the most of their first season, everyone wants to get that harvest on camera. There are plenty of different reasons why folks may want to film their hunts, but there’s usually one common thread: the pursuit of sportsmanship.
One of the unsung joys of recording hunts is the legacy it creates. These videos are more than just memories; they're educational tools, inspiring the next generation of hunters. Watching hunting films was one of the biggest influences on my own passion for the sport and now, I hope my own recordings will keep the tradition going. Sharing hunting videos encourages responsible sportsmanship and conservation and, to me, that’s priceless.
Just this past winter, I was able to take my nephew out with me on his first coyote hunt. His excitement was palpable and when he took his first live shot, I was ready with the ThOR 5 XD and its Laser Range Finder. It calculated the game's distance, ensuring his shot was precise while also teaching him the consequences of his actions. Unlike my wild boar story, this was a perfect shot.
Capturing that milestone on camera was invaluable. Because we used the THOR 5 XD, my nephew can cherish his first-ever harvest forever—and share it with young hunters like himself. As Aldo Leupold, the father of wildlife ecology, emphasized, inspiring younger generations to act as ethical conservationists is essential for the preservation of our passion. Though his vision might differ from today's digital age, the ethos remains. Videos are powerful tools: they chronicle, instruct, and inspire. With brands like ATN, we're equipped to embrace this aspect of hunting in a beautiful way.

Capturing the Hunt: From VHS Tapes to the Digital Era
Decoding the Shot
One of the most exciting and newest features in the X-Sight 5 Ultra is the upgraded high-performance sensor, which offers 4 million additional pixels for more accurate tones, even more vivid colors, and true-to-life visual sensations. With this sensor, hunters will have a significantly higher resolution than what they are used to, and it’s more than double what leading competitors provide in their optics.

Thanks to my ATN X-Sight LTV 5-15X scope, with its superior QHD+ Sensor and HD Optics, reviewing the video clarified the shot: a clean miss. Emotions are high when we pull the trigger, and sometimes our recollection of the event can be compromised by all of the adrenaline flowing through us during the excitement. What seemed like an obvious kill shot for me, ended up being nothing more than a few inches over the back, likely from a trigger bunch. While high-stakes moments can muddy our memory, recordings always bring clarity.
