Unlike coyotes, feral hogs are surprisingly not native to North America. They were introduced to our country roughly five to six centuries ago, and have been wreaking havoc ever since. While hog populations have been mostly segregated to the south, their numbers have boomed astronomically in recent years, allowing these pests to cover more and more ground. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, feral hogs are responsible for over $1.5 billion in crop damage each year—and that number is growing annually.
While coyotes have a much longer history in the U.S. than feral hogs, they can still significantly disrupt an ecosystem if not managed effectively by hunters. Coyotes are predators, preying mostly on smaller game like rodents, birds, and even small- to medium-sized mammals such as young or weakened whitetail deer. Without a strong management program in place, coyote populations can quickly explode, causing increased predation and creating an imbalance of the wildlife in any given ecosystem.

GEN 5
Historically, thermal optics were only used by military and law enforcement agencies. However, with ATN’s visionary approach and commitment to utility, these once exclusive tools are now easily accessible to hunters and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
As the industry leader in thermal optics, ATN offers a wide variety of models catering to a whole host of outdoor needs. Consider the ThOR LT — a lightweight and cost-effective model that doesn't compromise on performance or clarity. In contrast, the ThOR 5 stands as ATN's pinnacle of innovation, outshining virtually all competitors in its category. With features like its OLED display and Quad-Core processor, it delivers unparalleled image quality, day or night.
Thermal Imaging has revolutionized the way outdoor enthusiasts approach hunting, and American Technologies Network Corp. (ATN) leads this transformation with its groundbreaking technology. Thermal optics detect the heat emitted by game animals, enabling hunters to clearly identify their target and make an ethical shot, regardless of the light or weather conditions.

The Revolution
of Thermal Imaging in Hunting with ATN
Unlocking The Power of Sight
One of the most exciting and newest features in the X-Sight 5 Ultra is the upgraded high-performance sensor, which offers 4 million additional pixels for more accurate tones, even more vivid colors, and true-to-life visual sensations. With this sensor, hunters will have a significantly higher resolution than what they are used to, and it’s more than double what leading competitors provide in their optics.

CHAPTER 2
The term "thermal imaging" might sound technical, but its application in hunting is actually pretty straightforward. Essentially, thermal imaging technology detects the heat from a target and uses that information to render a clearer image in your scope. This technology is indispensable in so many scenarios, but especially for predator hunters who often operate during the darker hours when many animals are active.
Years ago, during my teenage days, my brother and I were passionate about hunting coyotes at night. Back then, lacking advanced thermal imaging technology, we relied on flashlights, which often scared our prey away. Today, with ATN's thermal optics, even the subtlest movement from an animal emits enough heat to highlight its silhouette, enabling not just detection but also an accurate shot. There would have been a lot more successful night hunts if we’d had these scopes back in the day!
A Spectrum of Choices: Understanding ATN’s Color Palette
ATN recognizes that while thermal imaging is universally beneficial, not all color palettes suit every hunter. They've introduced a range of customizable color palettes, tailored to individual preferences, specific hunting scenarios, and diverse environmental conditions. This adaptability underscores ATN's dedication to the hunter's experience, streamlining game spotting and navigation across various terrains and conditions.
Fine Tuning Your Hunt: When to Use Which Palette
ATN’s color palettes have redefined my hunting approach, enhancing visibility and simplifying target detection, even in the most challenging conditions. Every palette serves a unique purpose, optimized for various environments, game species, and lighting conditions.
Environmental Factors: In unpredictable situations, such as inclement weather or dense
foliage, palettes like White Hot or Rainbow can spotlight your target, giving you the confidence to land a shot.
Game Selection: Oddly enough, I've found that some palettes work better for specific game species. For instance, Rainbow or Ironbow seem more effective when hunting mature boars, while Black Hot has become my go-to for targeting coyotes in Ohio. You may find that depending on the size and even behavior of the animal you’re hunting, different palettes will work better—so it’s helpful to have options.
Lighting Conditions: This variable is the most obvious and one of the more important factors to consider when selecting your color palette. Palettes like White Hot and Black Hot excel in low-light settings, while Rainbow or Ironbow can distinguish temperature variations in brighter conditions with obstructed terrains.
There is a neighboring cattle farm next to my family’s hunting property, and the farmer was having issues with coyotes attacking livestock. The farmer, seeking a solution, granted us full hunting rights on his property in exchange for handling the coyote problem.
I had a good amount of experience with ATN products, but this coyote hunt would be my friends’ first time testing them out. As daylight faded, we ventured through an oak grove into an open cattle field. We activated our Ironbow palette, and the world transformed. From fiery reds to deep blues, the landscape was awash with temperature variances, revealing everything in our vicinity.
It didn't take long for a burst of warm hues to light up my friend's thermal display, showing a coyote making its way through the cattle field. Utilizing the ThOR 5 XD's integrated rangefinder and ballistic calculator, my friend was quickly able to dial in on his target and make a clean and successful shot. Needless to say, he spent the rest of the night trying to buy the scope off me!
Beyond Aesthetics: Real-World Applications of ATN’s Palettes
ATN's thermal optics have played a pivotal role in influencing my hunting tactics. Their color palettes enhance game detection, improve environmental awareness, and adapt to almost every hunting scenario. The data these palettes emphasize simplifies target identification and decision-making in the field in a way that would be otherwise impossible.
Coupled with the advanced technology in the scopes, the customizable palettes offer unmatched low-light visualization. With ATN’s thermal optics, hunters can navigate through challenging weather, unpredictable terrains, and maximize their hunting prowess, resulting in a significant spike in success rates.
Conclusion
White Hot is one of the most popular color palette options, emphasizing warmer objects and making them stand out brightly against cooler, darker backgrounds.
Black Hot is essentially the opposite of White Hot, portraying warmer objects in darker shades.
The Rainbow Palette is one of the more sophisticated and advanced options, assigning colors based on temperature variations and offering a vibrant view, which aids in determining animal movement, location, and behavior.
Ironbow provides high contrast visuals across a spectrum of colors, from the heat-intense reds to cool blues. These high-contrast ranges allow for the hunter to detect any abnormalities or inconsistencies within their view, and as a result, be able to make a better shot.
Sepia is similar to White Hot in that warmer objects are displayed in lighter visuals, with colder objects displayed in more darkened tones. However, these displays show gentler earth-tones, reducing eye strain.
A hunter’s relationship with feral hogs and coyotes can be complicated.
On one hand, hunting these predators can provide a level of excitement and intensity that is incomparable to any other pursuit, and one of them can provide great table fare (hint: it’s not the canine). On the other hand, their very existence can prove detrimental to farmlands and wildlife if
not effectively managed.
Historically, thermal optics were only used by military and law enforcement agencies. However, with ATN’s visionary approach and commitment to utility, these once exclusive tools are now easily accessible to hunters and outdoor enthusiasts alike.
