A hunter’s relationship with feral hogs and coyotes can be complicated.
On one hand, hunting these predators can provide a level of excitement and intensity that is incomparable to any other pursuit, and one of them can provide great table fare (hint: it’s not the canine). On the other hand, their very existence can prove detrimental to farmlands and wildlife if
not effectively managed.

Unlike coyotes, feral hogs are surprisingly not native to North America. They were introduced to our country roughly five to six centuries ago, and have been wreaking havoc ever since. While hog populations have been mostly segregated to the south, their numbers have boomed astronomically in recent years, allowing these pests to cover more and more ground. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, feral hogs are responsible for over $1.5 billion in crop damage each year—and that number is growing annually.
While coyotes have a much longer history in the U.S. than feral hogs, they can still significantly disrupt an ecosystem if not managed effectively by hunters. Coyotes are predators, preying mostly on smaller game like rodents, birds, and even small- to medium-sized mammals such as young or weakened whitetail deer. Without a strong management program in place, coyote populations can quickly explode, causing increased predation and creating an imbalance of the wildlife in any given ecosystem.

GEN 5
One of the main obstacles hunters face when trying to manage their feral hog and coyote populations is that, in order to be successful, you need to wait until the sun goes down. Coyotes have evolved to hunt primarily at night. Given their keen sense of smell, sight, and hearing, they are able to stealthily ambush their prey in the darkness. On the other hand, feral hogs feed at night for an entirely different reason. Most of their existence has been spent in warm and dry conditions and, due to their lack of sweat glands, feeding at night and resting during the day is the only way they’re able to regulate their body temperature and prevent overheating.
While bagging a hog or coyote during the daylight hours is by no means impossible, it will prove much more difficult. Due to the sharp increase in activity for both animals as the sun is going down, a nighttime hunting approach is going to be your best strategy. This was a seemingly impossible mission only a decade ago, but innovative companies like American Technologies Network Corp. (ATN) have revolutionized night vision capabilities. Their products give hunters that nocturnal advantage they have been lacking for so many years, allowing them to finally gain the upper-hand on land management.
Technology is evolving at such a rapid pace that you’d think an eventual plateau is unavoidable. However, ATN continues to move innovation forward in electro-optics. Their latest release, the 5th Generation X-Sight 5 Ultra HD 4K+ Smart Day/Night Scope, has set a new standard for night vision once again.
One of the most exciting and newest features in the X-Sight 5 Ultra is the upgraded high-performance sensor, which offers 4 million additional pixels for more accurate tones, even more vivid colors, and true-to-life visual sensations. With this sensor, hunters will have a significantly higher resolution than what they are used to, and it’s more than double what leading competitors provide in their optics.
If you were to say that hunting is one of the most pure and effective forms of conservation that exists, some people may disagree. Especially someone who is unfamiliar or has never had first-hand experience pursuing wild game in the outdoors. But the truth is, while hunters may not always get the credit for their activism, responsible and ethical hunting can contribute greatly to conservation. This especially true when pursuing coyotes and feral hogs.
Feral hogs reproduce at alarming rates because they become sexually mature at around six months of age, and can have six piglets per litter, twice a year. While the reproduction of coyotes isn’t quite that extreme, they still are able to reproduce much faster than most mammals, leading to a high risk of overpopulation.
Hunting provides a method of controlling these populations, therefore preventing the chance of an imbalance within the ecosystem of a particular species, whether that be predator or prey. The goal of predator hunting is not to eradicate the entire populations of these animals, but rather to help control them.
ATN has truly disrupted the entire optic market through constant innovation and consistent upgrades, to the likes of which we haven’t observed in this industry—and it’s something to be extremely excited about. One of the most impressive advancements is the addition of an Advanced Ballistic Calculator that ensures an ethical and accurate shot each and every time. These new advancements will allow you to experience better visuals whether you’re hunting at night, or even during the day, while also giving you ambient temperature compensation.
Another added feature that should excite hunters is the integrated, built-in laser rangefinder that will read dead-accurate distances up to 1000 yards regardless of the time of day. Coyote and feral hog hunting leaves very little room for error, especially at night. So the importance of having a quality scope that provides accurate information in order to create a clean shot cannot be overstated.
ATN has now made 4K media capturing the standard for optic design, which is an innovation that most wouldn’t even have dreamt of being possible just a decade ago. Now, with just the press of a button, you can video record your hunt in 4K quality, and trasfer any recorded videos directly to your phone/tablet via WIFI.
While there are some products on the market that offer smart-video optics, none seem to be quite as user-friendly as the X-Sight 5 LRF. The Recoil-Activated Video (RAV) allows you to focus all of your attention on your target's killzone, while the intelligent design of the scope does the recording for you.

It’s no secret that the abundance of coyotes and feral hogs can be detrimental to any local ecosystem and put a burden on land management and conservation efforts. Still, there seems to be an incredible amount of confusion and hesitancy surrounding nighttime hunting, likely due to the assumption of its difficulty. And it’s true: hunting at night creates a situation that we as humans just aren’t accustomed to, thus putting us at a disadvantage, as we are essentially going into a nighttime hunt blind.
However, thanks to the innovative technology provided by ATN, we now have some of the most advanced capabilities directly at our fingertips—or rather at our eyes. With features such as ballistic calculators, 4K+ sensors, integrated laser rangefinders, digital reticle editors, and RAV recording systems, hunters now have all of the advantages to put them into the alpha position during night hunts. It’s more than possible to practice responsible land and game management, and be active conservationists through our nighttime hunting pursuits.
No Longer Going Blind
This feature has proved crucial in the field, especially while hunting feral hogs and coyotes in the nighttime hours. So often, I will make a shot on an animal and have to rely on gut instinct as to whether or not I made a clean and fatal shot. With the RAV by ATN, I can quickly analyze the reaction of the wounded animal and determine the appropriate time to start searching for a blood trail. As any hunter knows, this can be the difference between a successful hunt and an unsuccessful hunt.
