As a partner of the North Carolina Department of Transportation, it is vital for Fred Smith Company to focus on quality and efficiency on their construction projects from start to finish. Using over 2½ M USG of fuel annually, Fred Smith needed the ability to better track where the fuel goes, when it’s used, and who dispenses it to help the organization increase efficiency and cut back on operational costs.

Challenge

World Kinect identified a more advanced solution to track and manage every drop of fuel going in and out of Fred Smith Company’s onsite tank farms, remote satellite tank installations, hundreds of on-road vehicles, and >1,000 off-road equipment units by introducing World Kinect’s FleetConnect remote telemetry technology.

Our experienced FleetConnect technicians installed 15 FleetConnect fuel management systems; 8 stationary units and 7 mobile units at Fred Smith’s operation in Raleigh, NC. Seeing the benefit on their asset utilization, Fred Smith installed 2 more FleetConnect telemonitoring units.

FleetConnect fully integrated with Fred Smith’s existing ERP system - JD Edwards, producing reporting that showed not only what equipment has been fueled, but also what equipment has not been fueled.

Fred Smith is now able to track the fuel that their trucks were delivering at jobsites, as well as the fuel coming out of their own load rack and dispensers at their own base.

The customer gained the ability to operate from and centralize reporting in a single database for both mobile and stationary fueling applications (one system for the onsite fleet fueling operation, and one stationary pedestal - all reporting to the single database).

Modern telemetry solution has helped Fred Smith to mitigate fuel theft, tracking inaccuracy, unaccountability, uncertainty in where each drop of fuel was going, and incidents of misfuelling (dispensing the wrong product into a tank), leading to more efficient and cost-effective operations.
