On Dec. 8, 1941, a day after the surprise attack by Japan on Pearl Harbor, President Franklin D. Roosevelt asked for and received a federal declaration of war against Japan. On Dec. 11, 1941, Germany and Italy allied with Japan and declared war on the U.S., fully engaging the United States in World War II.
2,403 Americans died, including 68 civilians. Half of those killed were aboard the USS Arizona, which remains sunken off the coast of Oahu, Hawaii.

As of April 2024, Kathleen Farley, California state chair of the Sons and Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors, reported there are only 19 survivors of the attack still living. With the deaths of Lou Conter and Dick Higgins in 2024, there are no survivors of the USS Arizona still alive.
National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day is recognized annually on Dec. 7. The day was designated by the U.S. Congress on Aug. 23, 1994.
