Any great road trip through the Smokies begins in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, the gateway to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Whether exploring the Smokies on foot with a day hike to Clingmans Dome (the highest point in the state) or from the water on a kayak excursion, the folks at Smoky Mountain Guides offer several adventures that bring America’s most-visited national park to life. Keep an eye out for the mourning doves, Eastern meadowlarks, deer, and elk that call the park home, especially when visiting Cades Cove, a foliage-filled valley and one of the most popular spots inside the park. Kick off your trip through the Poconos with a visit to historic Milford, Pennsylvania, considered the birthplace of the American Conservation Movement for hosting the first head of the U.S. Forest Service. Once you’re familiar with the legacy of the Poconos, it’s time for some active adventures. The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area encompasses 40 miles surrounding the Delaware River. Whether on a hiking trail or a scenic drive, it’s easy to see why the Poconos have lured vacationers for hundreds of years. Hardwood forest trails lead to seasonal waterfalls, and the river itself is the perfect spot for canoeing, fishing, and swimming. From Delaware Water Gap, head to nearby Stroudsburg, the last stop on the tour. Since 1995, this Italian restaurant has been “a shrine to the divine,” according to Dahl. Word is definitely getting out: Dahl & Di Luca’s wine list has won national awards for 15 consecutive years, and in 2023, the fine-dining spot swooned so many diners that it was rated one of the top 100 most romantic restaurants in America by OpenTable. Delicate, soulful, and sophisticated all at once, dishes like arancini and the aptly-named Lisa’s Luscious Lasagna will make you feel like you’re sharing a date night in the Mediterranean.
COOKING BECAME A LIFELINE for Lisa Dahl after the loss of her son, Justin, in 1994. “As I started my life over, I followed the passion of what we loved to do together: cook and eat,” reveals Dahl, who used to work in the fashion industry and is now a lauded and award-winning self-taught chef. “Today, in my six restaurants, you will see dishes dedicated to Justin. Step inside Cucina Rustica and “you will truly feel as if you’re entering an Italian villa,” Dahl explains. Rustic, cozy fare like eggplant Parmigiana, four-cheese ravioli, and beef meatballs in porcini cream sauce are the epitome of Italian Mediterranean comfort food — right in the heart of the American Southwest. Every plate stars locally sourced ingredients from in and around Sedona, including sustainably raised meats and fresh organic produce.

With locations in both West Sedona and Village of Oak Creek (two Sedona neighborhoods), Pisa Lisa features menu items named after Dahl’s parents. “Eating pizza together was one of their favorite date-night activities, and although they’ve passed away, I like to think they’d be enjoying my pizzas at Pisa Lisa the same way,” she says. Expect a “very tongue-in-cheek feel” courtesy of the music, posters, and art, which you can savor as you feast your way through tapas, white and red pizzas, gelato, and more.
